(Covington – November 24, 2008)  Legendary labor leader Victor Bussie today received the highest honor bestowed by the Louisiana Federation of Teachers.

Bussie, the longtime president of the Louisiana AFL-CIO, received the LFT’s Friend of Education Award. As president of the Louisiana AFL-CIO for 41 years, “Mr. Vic” championed public education and was a stalwart supporter of the Louisiana Federation of Teachers.

His early support for the Federation guaranteed the fledgling union a seat at the table when important education decisions were made. As LFT grew to be the largest education organization in the state, the union maintained a close relationship with the AFL-CIO president. Always a source of wise counsel and support, Bussie opened doors of opportunity for the LFT that would otherwise have remained shut.

The award was presented at the Louisiana Federation of Teachers’ 44th annual convention in Covington.
