Lt. Gen. Russel Honoré will be keynote speaker at LFT convention

Best known as the person who returned order and safety to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, retired Army Lt. General Russel Honoré will deliver the keynote address at the 50th annual Louisiana Federation of Teachers’ convention in Alexandria on Monday, November 25.

Since leaving the army, Lt. Gen. Honoré has penned two books and spoken passionately about leadership, responsibility and a commitment to the common good. It was after Lt. Gen. Honoré gave a spirited defense of public education on public radio’s Jim Engster show that the LFT invited him to be the keynote speaker at this year’s convention.

Other highlights of the convention will include presentations on the controversial Common Core Curriculum State Standards and teacher evaluation systems, a panel discussion of school privatization, a report on public retirement systems and LFT President Steve Monaghan’s State of the Union address.

The annual convention is the Federation’s chief policy-making body. It comprises delegates elected from among the union’s 20,000-plus members.

This year’s convention will be held from November 24 through 26 at the Best Western Convention Center, 2720 N. MacArthur Drive in Alexandria.
