This Lundi Gras we kick off National Public Schools Week!
Join LFT, AFT and the whole Learning First Alliance to celebrate and honor our nation’s public schools.
Nine out of 10 students in the United States attend public schools, so let’s call attention to the great work being done to give our nation’s children every opportunity to grow and succeed.
Public Schools Week gives us the “opportunity to show our commitment to our students and our communities and for all of us to recognize the essential role of our nation’s public schools. At it’s best, our public schools provide a ladder of opportunity; a place where young people develop the muscle of civic participation; a safe and welcoming place where our diverse country forges a common identity. Public Education is indeed foundational to our democracy” said Randi Weingarten, AFT President.
In honor of Public Schools Week, we ask that you post on social media about the work you are doing with #PSW20. Add your voice to the conversation about our nation’s public schools.
In Louisiana, we are in the midst of a critical moment for our public schools. The Board of Elementary and Secondary Education will soon choose a new State Superintendent of Education. As an educator, what do you want to see in a candidate? What do you think is important for BESE to consider as they make their decision? Let us know by taking this brief survey – click here.
And don’t forget how important it is to secure additional funding for public schools and teacher & school employee raises. In order to make sure we have as much funding as possible; we must make sure that the REC passes a realistic revenue projection. If you haven’t already, please take a moment to send an email to the REC now!
Across the country this week, administrators, teachers, specialists, teacher educators, parents, school board members, and community members are coming together to pledge to support public schools.
"Today, I pledge my support for public education. America’s public schools educate nine out of 10 students in the United States—more than 50 million—regardless of ability, race, wealth, language, religion or country of origin, to prepare them for future endeavors. By pledging to support our nation’s public schools , I also am pledging to strengthen the future of our country."
